This wine is the foundation, the cornerstone of our production. Do you want to know Panizzi? Taste it. Do you want to find it? You can not be mistaken: the label is unique, green, our corporate color, and squared, clear, incontrovertible.
With this wine, grapes harvested in 1989, Panizzi was born, making a product that is a true and immediate synonym with the concept that we still committ to today: quality.
The uproar provoked by Gianni Panizzi's wines in the early Nineties has become legendary: those who had the pleasure to try them could appreciate their totally unexpected qualities. Panizzi proved, once and for all, the potential of the grape Vernaccia di San Gimignano, expressing at the highest levels when accompanied by modern cultivation techniques and prolonged aging. Those who were lucky enough to purchase them could also see that, after severa years, the wines did not loose quality aging, but rather improved.
"For us, Vernaccia was an everyday wine - says Simone Niccolai, owner of Panizzi -, you saw your grandparents drink it as a table wine. Undermining this basic belief and building an excellent wine out of it is the result of a unique vision that we carry out every day".
But let's get to know Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG Panizzi better.
It is produced with grapes coming from all corporate vineyards (Larniano, Montagnana, Santa Margherita, Lazzeretto) and is our most immediate Vernaccia di San Gimignano.
It is not an aromatic or semi-aromatic wine, it is not easily captivating as many white wines, but it wins in the long run: in a word, special.
The color is straw yellow, clear and bright, with greenish reflections. The fragrance is articulated, dense and delicate with notes that recall first broom and lime, then fresh fruits, such as green apple, pear and grapefruit.
The taste is balanced, dry, fragrant thanks to a good acidity that highlights the fruity and citrus aromas. The aftertaste is persistent and slightly bitter. It should be served a bit warmer than other white wines, at 10-11 degrees Celsius, and tasted in front of a summer sunset.
What is the year 2015 like?
"The 2015 harvest was one of the best in 20 years - explains Walter Sovran, Winemaker Panizzi -. This is also true for the whites of San Gimignano. Our Vernaccia, in particular, is characterized by a soft acidity, by a non-aggressive impact on the palate, typical of the vine. It progressed a bit slower than normal in the tanks, but once in the bottle it shows a beautiful progression".
"It is good when it gets readyas, but after one year it's even better, which is why we offer it to the market in two consecutive years - says Susanna Santini, Sales Manager of Panizzi -."
Moreover Vernaccia di San Gimignano intrigues: it is a unique grape variety, it only grows here in San Gimignano and, for this, it is not for everyone but only for curious drinkers, open to new experiences. It is in fact the modern interpretation of an ancient wine and full of history. In 2016 the DOC Vernaccia di San Gimignano turned 50 years old and celebrated its great tradition looking towards the future.
